Why is Superman II such a good flick? Because Superman gets his butt kicked not once, but twice! OK, the first time he is not actually Superman but a mere mortal. But still, he gets beat up twice!
Don’t get me wrong, Superman: The Movie is a great flick (and has its own spot in this list), but it was missing something - adversaries for Superman to fight in hand-to-hand combat.
I was never a big Superman fan as a kid because no one (usually) could beat him. He was Superman - he could do anything unless you shoved a green rock in his face. Then along came Superman II and General Zod. THIS was what what I wanted to see: Superman fighting villains that could actually match his strength.
As you may or may not know, there was (and is) controversy surrounding this flick and its two (that’s right - two) directors. There was even a new cut of the film released last year on DVD (which I haven’t seen - if anyone has, please feel free to comment about it).
Notwithstanding these issues, the original Superman II is an excellent flick and deserves a spot in my Top 100 Movies. Granted, the special effects are dated and you don’t get the same sense of wonder and awe seeing a man fly, but it’s still a lot of fun.
I’m not too crazy about this trailer though. Anyone else?
