We’ve reached the top 40 movies in this list. Can you believe it? Only a year to go :-)

No. 40 - Say Anything (1989)

A great movie from Cameron Crowe, one of my favorite filmmakers, and John Cusack, one of my favorite actors.

No. 39 - Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Spider-Man loses his powers, gets them back and continues to chase Kirsten Dunst for some reason. Seriously though, Spider-Man 2 is a great comic book movie, an improvement on the original, and the best in series.

No. 38 - Old School (2003)

Will Farrell, Luke Wilson, and Vince Vaughn return to college (sort of). Classic.

43 - The Usual Suspects (1995)

This flick has one of the greatest twists in movie history. I didn’t see it coming, did you?

42 - Wayne’s World (1992)

I haven’t seen this movie in a while, but watching this trailer brought it all back. A great, original comedy based on an Saturday Night Live skit about two metal heads with a public access show. You may have already known that :-)

41 - The Graduate (1967)

The oldest flick in this list is a great movie with an (almost) equally great soundtrack. I know many of you probably haven’t seen this flick, but I urge you to - you won’t be disappointed. Dustin Hoffman is hilarious and the writing and direction are superb. The following trailer contains some spoilers.

No. 58 - Young Guns (1988)

Man I loved this flick when I was growing up. Must have seen it 50 times. Plus, its got Jack Bauer and John Locke. Well, kind of.

No. 57 - Batman (1989)

Remember the hype surrounding this flick? Saw it at a sneak preview - one of the best movie-going experiences I have ever had.

No. 56 - Fargo (1996)

Greatness. Although, after seeing No Country for Old Men, Fargo is now my third favorite Coen Brothers’ flick.

Site Update: Top 100 Movies

Posted on March 17, 2008
Filed Under General | 2 Comments

I’ve decided to speed up the countdown for my Top 100 Movies. A comment by Mike from Pop Critics and my own contemplation over where this blog is headed has resulted in this unprecedented action :-) Simply put, it is just taking too long, especially after my extended “break.”

I am also trying to determine what direction, if any, I should take this blog. My (almost) two-month long hiatus stalled the growth of the site, and I think the current manner in which I have been revealing my Top 100 Movies may have contributed as well.

So here’s the plan: I am going to reveal three at a time until we get to the top 10. Then it will be back to one at time so that I can give more insight and analysis into why each of my top 10 is, well, in my top 10!

I may also try some new things here including posting more than once a day, throw in a “non-movie list” post every once in a while, etc. Of course, I am always open to suggestions, so feel free to suggest away.

Top 100 Movies: No. 68 - The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996)

The People vs. Larry FlyntThe People vs. Larry Flynt is on this list for three reasons: 1) The performances by Edward Norton, Woody Harrelson and Courtney Love; 2) the subject matter - free speech; and 3) it’s a great, entertaining movie (OK, that’s kind of a given).

Edward Norton is terrific as a lawyer who defends his client in an effort to protect our freedom of speech. Unfortunately for him, his client isn’t that sympathetic - he’s a pornographer.

Whether or not you find Larry Flynt’s chosen profession distasteful, the legal issues litigated were vital to our First Amendment rights. The clip below sums up what was at stake.
