A History of Violence tells the story of a family that is torn apart after its patriarch kills two criminals that enter his diner and threaten his customers. It is, as the title suggests, a violent movie, but the violence is entirely necessary and justified.

It is also a great flick from top to bottom - great writing, great cinematography, great directing and great acting, especially by William Hurt, who earned an Oscar nomination for a short but brilliant performance. The film moves rapidly towards an ending that may leave some wanting more. I for one found it satisfying and perfect as is.

To be honest, I was surprised at how high I ranked this film at first because I have only seen it once (I have seen the majority of the flicks in this list at least twice). With a few more viewings, it would probably have made it into my top 20. But for now, it comes in at a respectable No. 81 in my Top 100 Movies list.

I may have to watch it again tonight after seeing this trailer.
