Top 100 Movies: No. 100 - Road House (1989)

Ok, relax, I know what you must be thinking. Just keep reading.

Road House sets the tone for the rest of this list. Many of the movies on this list hold some special meaning for me. Others are on the list because they are great films. Still others made the list because they simply entertain me, “guilty pleasure” or not. Road House fits nicely into this last category.

Admittedly, the plot of this movie is ridiculous (spoilers and MAJOR run-on sentences ahead for those of you who care) - a smallish bouncer (name of Dalton) with a degree in philosophy who loves being a bouncer (even though he doesn’t really seem to enjoy it for most of the movie - maybe the philosophy degree didn’t help his job prospects) takes on one of the worst villains in film history because he has grown attached to a town to which he recently moved. This town is inhabited by some really stupid people who can’t figure out how to run said villain out of town and continue to pay said villain sums of money for “protection” even though the town has telephone lines (watch the movie, people use the phone) which could presumably connect them with a state or federal law enforcement agency. This smallish bouncer (there is a great running joke throughout the movie regarding Dalton’s size) decides to stay and fight said villain and in the process risks his own life, the townspeople’s lives, his girlfriend’s life (who just happens to be the villain’s ex-wife - didn’t see that one coming, did you?) and gets his best friend/mentor killed. Then again, maybe he did all of this because he has a huge ego and can’t stand to lose. Ok, I’ll take a breath now.

Watch this movie again (or for the first time). Just sit back and enjoy it for what it is - entertainment - nothing more, nothing less (hopefully). I honestly can’t help but watch this movie if it is on TV. Let the comments begin (I hope).
